SHAKE2000

FAQs

In this web page, we provide a list of the most commonly asked questions about SHAKE2000.  If you need technical support, please send us an e-mail E-mail to SHAKE2000 Support.

  • USB Hardware Key: Starting on May 2007, the program will require a USB hardware key to work.  We will no longer use the software key.  We will no longer provide new license files for software key users.  If you are a registered user of the software key version of SHAKE2000 and would like to obtain a hardware key, please send us an e-mail to obtain a price quote.

  • There used to be a database of ground motion files included with the program? Yes, but it is no longer offered.  It is better to download the ground motion records from databases available through the internet, such as PEER, Cosmos, etc.

  • Installation under Windows XP/Vista: During installation, please select the “Everyone” option when asked if you would like to install SHAKE2000 for anyone who uses the computer.  When first running the program, a "Non-Registered Copy" form will be displayed.  Click on “Ok” to close this form and display the Main Menu form.  In this form, you will need to click on the "Register" command button to display the registration form.  The "System ID" information will be highlighted in yellow.  To complete the registration for the copy of the program you ordered, please send me an e-mail with the information highlighted in yellow for your computer.  I will use this information to create the license files for the computer where the program is installed, and send the files attached to an e-mail.   I would appreciate if you can use your e-mail address when sending me the above information.

  • How do I upgrade from ShakEdit to SHAKE2000? If you are a registered user of ShakEdit you can upgrade for free by downloading the February 2001 update from our Updates web page.  The program will look for the license file in your computer.  If the file is found, then the full version of the program will be installed.  Otherwise, the evaluation copy will install and you will not be able to print or save.  The update does not include the database of ground motion files.  If you are a registered user of ShakEdit and would like to obtain a copy of the database, you will need to order the upgrade CD-ROM from our Buy web page.

  • Is SHAKE included with SHAKE2000? Yes.   A recompiled version of SHAKE is included with SHAKE2000.

  • Are the ShakEdit and SHAKE91 input and output files compatible with SHAKE2000?  Yes.  However, once you modify the input file with SHAKE2000, it will no longer be compatible with SHAKE91.

  • What are the minimum hardware/software requirements to use SHAKE2000? Windows 95/98/2000/ME/NT/XP/Vista - PC Pentium, 200 MB free hard disk space, display resolution of 800x600.

  • Sometimes SHAKE does not execute when clicking on the SHAKE command button?  The most common reason for this error is that the path where SHAKE2000 was installed contains a blank space.  For example a correct path would be c:\shake2000 and an incorrect path would be c:\shake 2000

  • I am using Windows 95/NT 4.0 and my computer crashes after I installed SHAKE2000?  This problem is usually caused by a conflict with the user32.dll or other *.dll files included with SHAKE2000.  Some users have done the following to correct this problem: 1) reboot your computer in safe DOS mode.  2) In the directory where SHAKE2000 was installed, there is a subdirectory called Backup.  3) Switch to the Backup subdirectory and copy the files from this directory to your "c:\windows\system" for Windows 95 or "c:\winnt\system32" for Windows NT. 4) Reboot your computer.   Everything should be back to normal.

  • Is the program compatible with Windows NT?  Some users have been successful installing the program under Windows NT.  However, there have been other users whose system has crashed.  At this time, we do not recommend to install SHAKE2000 under Windows NT.

  • Can the program be installed on a server?  No.  The program was not developed to work as a networked applications.  It should only be installed on individual PCs.

  • The SHAKE window opens but it closes almost immediately? One cause of this problem could be the path where the output files will be written to.  For example, if the directory where the two output files created by SHAKE is c:\shake2000\output, but the output directory does not exist, then there will be an error writing the output files to this directory and the program will crash.  Also, see the above question on clicking on the SHAKE command button.

  • How can we pay for the program? RegSoft.com, our payment processing service, accepts credit card payments, checks, PayPal, bank transfers or purchase orders.  You can order through the internet, phone, fax, or regular mail.   You can find the order forms by visiting our web site at http://www.shake2000.com and clicking on the Order link, and then on the Buy Now icon.

  • From experience, what are the most common problems in running it for the 1st few times?   I am not clear about this question.  The question I would ask you is if you have any experience with SHAKE ( or the different versions SHAKE91, SHAKE88).  It is easier to learn SHAKE2000 if you have used SHAKE before and if you are familiar with seismic analysis.  One problem that may occur frequently is with SHAKE.  SHAKE is still a DOS program, and as such it crashes easily if there is an error with the input data.  However, SHAKE2000 is a Windows based program and includes error trapping routines that provide error messages when there is a problem.

  • What are the required inputs? It depends on which feature of SHAKE2000 you are using.  To get a better idea about most of the features in SHAKE2000 and the input data required for each, please download the User's Manual from http://www.shake2000.com/download/Manual.pdf

  • What staff support is there for HELP when running the program? We provide technical support for the program via e-mail.  This support is for problems related to use of the program itself and not for support on how the program is being used or applied.   Usually we like to get a copy of the input file and ground motion file.  This helps us when trying to understand the source of the problem.  We do not provide support for questions related to applications of the program to real life situations.

  • How big is the program and in what medium/ form does it come? eg CDROM, direct download from the net etc.? The program is distributed by downloading it from the internet (approximately 62 Mb).

  • Do you find most hassles from users can be sorted quickly, using the help assistance with the program?  Yes, most problems can be solved by reading the User's Manual.  For first time users we recommend them to go through the tutorial to become familiar with the different commands and features.

  • Is there a hard copy also sent of this HELP / documentation assistance? A printed copy of the User's Manual is provided with the software package for customer in the USA only.  The help file included with the program is basically the same information included in the User's Manual.  A PDF copy of the manual is installed with the program in the Manual folder.

  • What delays are there in receiving a copy once the order has been lodged?  The program is only offered through a download from our website.  After your order has been processed and approved, we will send you a link to download the program within 24 hours.

  • What are the minimum requirements of a Windows Based PC for running this program? Based on information from several users, the program works under Windows 95, 98, 2000, XP Home, and XP Pro with no problems.   There are problems under Windows NT, but these have been solved on a case by case basis.  The program should not be installed on a network server, it was not developed to work as a network application.
